Cyndy’s House of Pancakes! This iconic old Seattle family-run diner operated for 53 yrs. Cyndy's owner Gae Bowman was there for nearly 40 yrs. & after breaking hip, finally wanted to retire (she was in her ‘70s). Cyndy's was started by Gae’s hubby Don in ‘58, who found an old sign for "Andy's" but there was already an Andy’s in Seattle, so he had a sign maker re-arrange the "A" to a "Cy" & "Cyndy's" was born (never was a real Cyndy). It moved a couple times, landing on Aurora in ’72 at a former furniture store & they built a custom interior w/red vinyl booths, faux wood paneling & famous hi-back swivel thrones at lunch counter. Metal flower sculptures on wall, dragons & dinosaurs hung from ceiling & giant cat photo behind the aquarium. Around ‘08, potential new owner Bob Davis (also owned Giggles Comedy Club) wanted to turn it into “Cyndy’s” strip club after city lifted 17yr moratorium. “To me it’s just a business” he said. “I don’t personally go into those clubs, only for research purposes. I’m liberal to the point I think the men deserve some nice clubs in this town. I want to have a nice one with food service…we might still have pancakes.” Cyndy’s closed in ‘11 & was demo’d for a multi-story bldg. of low-income housing.
